Azahar Emulator: A new Beginning

Hello, dear reader!

Welcome to Azahar-Emulator.org—your new go-to source for updates, insights, and exciting news about our journey in the world of 3DS emulation. This is where we’ll be sharing the story of Azahar Emulator, from its origins to the present, and what lies ahead. Let’s dive in together!

How It All Started: The End of an Era for Citra

March 4, 2024—a day etched in the history of 3DS emulation. On this fateful day, Tropic Haze announced the end of support for the beloved Citra emulator. For many of us, it felt like losing a trusted companion. Disappointment was widespread, but a few determined folks decided that this wasn’t the end of the road.

In the wake of Citra’s closure, several forks sprang to life. Among them, two stood out for their dedication and innovation: Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s Citra Fork. Each carried forward the torch, albeit with different visions and priorities.

The Lime3DS Approach

The contributors behind Lime3DS, though new to emulator development, took up the challenge with enthusiasm. While their technical expertise was still developing, they focused on enhancing the emulator’s user experience.

Here’s what Lime3DS brought to the table:

In addition to these features, the team worked hard to iron out smaller issues left in Citra’s Android version, particularly its Kotlin-based rewrite, which needed polishing.

The PabloMK7 Fork

On the other hand, PabloMK7—a seasoned Citra developer—focused on low-level improvements. His goal? To refine the emulator’s core. While the UI stayed largely the same, PabloMK7’s fork made a major leap with one standout feature:

  • Artic Base Integration: This 3DS homebrew app lets users broadcast game and save data directly from their 3DS console over a local network. No more manual dumping! It turned the 3DS into a hub for seamless game access, much like the Nintendo Switch’s portability model.

The Present: Unity in Action

After months of working independently, PabloMK7 and I had a thought: What if we combined our efforts? The idea of unifying our work into a single, robust project seemed too good to ignore. And thus, Azahar Emulator was born.

We pooled our resources, brainstormed names, designed a logo, and began merging the two codebases. Most changes from both forks were preserved, though a few minor tweaks had to be left behind for the sake of compatibility.

But we didn’t stop there! Azahar Emulator is launching with some brand-new features:

  • eShop Support: Download your purchased games and demos, even after the eShop’s shutdown.
  • Performance Hacks: Enjoy smoother gameplay on select devices and games, thanks to optimized hacks.

What’s Next for Azahar Emulator?

Looking ahead, our mission is clear: build on the solid foundation we’ve created. By uniting the fragmented development efforts of Citra’s forks, Azahar Emulator will provide a stable platform for future innovations in 3DS emulation.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Consistent Updates: We’ll use this blog to keep you in the loop about new features, fixes, and progress.
  • Community Engagement: Whether you’re a developer or a gamer, Azahar Emulator aims to be a hub where everyone feels welcome.

We’re excited to embark on this journey with you. Together, let’s write the next chapter in 3DS emulation. Stay tuned for updates, and feel free to share your thoughts—we’re all ears!
